Instructors and Bios
Dr. Matt Lydum is the Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at Pacific University. Lydum started as head track coach at Pendleton High School in Eastern Oregon, then served in that role at San Francisco State University, and Defiance College in Ohio. He was USOC delegate to the International Olympic Academy and was project writer for the Human Kinetics text, Coaching Youth Track & Field (2000). He completed his PhD in Teaching and Teacher Education at the University of Arizona and currently directs the Youth Specialization – Level 2 program.
Joel Pearson is the Head Coach at Pratt Community College. Previously, Joel was the Director at Cardinal Stritch University. During his time, the Wolves captured six national champions, 34 all-Americans, 42 National Qualifiers, and set an NAIA National DMR record. A USATF Level 3 / IAAF Level V Academy Coach – Endurance & Youth, Joel holds USATF Level 2 certifications in Endurance, Combined Events, Sprint/Hurdles, Jumps, and Youth. He holds a Masters in Sport Management.
Chris Richardson is currently the Director of Track and Field/Cross Country at Cerritos College. Richardson previously served as the Director of Track and Field/Cross Country at El Camino Compton Center, Assistant Coach at the University of Central Arkansas, and Head Coach at Moorpark College. Through these various coaching endeavors many NCAA Division I Regional qualifiers, school record holders, state champions, Junior All-Americans, and CCCAA All-American were developed. Most recently, Richardson has served as a Team USA Coach for the Capital Cup, NACAC U23 Championships, Pan American Junior Championships, and Thorpe Cup USA vs Germany.
Tony Veney most recently served as the Director of men’s and women’s track and field at Ventura College and has over 40 years of track and field coaching experience. Previously, Veney served as Director of track and field/cross country at North Carolina A&T State University and stops at UCLA, Portland State and the University of Oregon. While an assistant coach at UCLA (2003-2009), Veney led 15 Bruins to either indoor or outdoor All-American status, six Pac-10 Champions and four NCAA West Regional titles. During his tenure at Portland State, the Vikings had 28 All-Big Sky Academic award winners. Prior to coaching at Portland State, Veney was an assistant men’s track coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Oregon from 1998-2001.
