Instructors and Bios

Larry Judge, Ph.D., C.S.C.S. is an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and coordinator of the graduate coaching program at Ball State University. He has 18 years of Division I coaching experience with Indiana State University, the University of South Carolina, the University of Wyoming and the University of Florida. He is currently the USA Track & Field National Chairman for Coaching Education in the throwing events. He is also a Level III instructor for the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) Coaching Education Program and has coached more than 100 NCAA Division I All-Americans, including eight Olympians.

David Pavlansky was head boys’ track and cross country coach at Boardman High School from 1999 –2010. Twice named OAT&CCC District 1 Boys’ Track Coach of the Year, Dave received the 2007 Fred Daffler State Coach of the Year Award for Boys’ Cross Country. In 2007 he was among 10 sprint coaches selected nationwide by the USATF to attend the Emerging Elite Coaches’ School in Orlando, Florida. During Dave’s tenure Boardman teams produced both Indoor and Outdoor state champions as well as two Nike All-Americans. Dave has USATF Level 2 certifications in Jumps, Endurance, and Sprints / Hurdles / Relays and he currently serves as USATF Regional Coordinator of Coaching Education for the Midwest and East.

Rick Rothman is a volunteer assistant coach with the Florida Atlantic University men’s and women’s cross country and track. He has coached for a total of 38 years with his teams winning 151 major championships, including Seven State Championships, and finishing runner-up in 45 other major championships. His record includes seven state titles in girls cross country; two runner-ups in girls and boys cross country; 12 regional titles, and 25 district titles. Rothman has been selected Coach of the Year 117 times, including State Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1999, 2002, and 2003 along with the Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame State Girls Cross Country Coach of the year in 2009. He was a finalist for the NHSACA National Coach of the Year in 2006 and again, this year, in 2012, being named National Coach of the Year for girls cross country.

Shawn Venable is the jumps & hurdles coach at Liberty University. Venable also serves USATF as the Coaching Education Southeast Regional Coordinator and is a Level 1 & 2 Instructor. He has earned the IAAF Level 5/ USATF Level 3 certifications in the Jumps, Sprints & Hurdles and Combined Events.
